Grand.Opening of Meraki ~ Wandering.Boutique

<< February 25th 2017 >>
After a long hard winter working on this 1992 short school bus it was finally time to take her out for a ride.  Theres a lot that I learned from the short 1 mile ride from my studio to the venue where she was going to be set up for a shot 4 hours on a very sunny Sunday.
The weather couldnt have been more beautiful, a breeze, blue skies and perfectly fluffy clouds floating by.  My dad had come down from D.C. to be a part of this new chapter and "Historical.Moment" as one of my close friends called it.  My dad had the honor to ride with me inside the bus as I drove her out of our steep driveway with the hopes that nothing that was set up would fall or need to be broken down...that did not work.
Lesson #1 Break down the shelving goodies, as much as you think the bus might not rock, she definitely is a bumpy ride and all my tinctures, shelves and plants and candles and well just about everything went flying all over the place.  Nothing broke, thank goodness but theres that.
As we drive down the road, it felt great to be taking her out for the first time with all the goodies set up on the inside.  My nerves were brewing as I kept looking back through my rear mirror watching the clothes swing from side to side and my dad trying his best to brace things swaying from left and right.  Finally we made it to the venue.  All things in tact <3
Lesson #2 If your my helper, I appreciate you wanting to help get things set up, but especially since this was the first time with the bus and im still figuring things out...Juliana Yasmine = Devil wears Prada evil! For real. Setting up for me is a moment when I zone out of my surroundings and set all things up to be displayed beautifully and in an enticing way.  This is a good time to give me space.  All artists I think can be this way, (unless its just me and im feisty like that) But the set up is crucial.  This one especially, it was the first time out with Meraki and I wanted everything to be perfect.
As the day went on, friends, family, locals, passers by, a little bit of everyone, curious to know if I was a food truck and/or if they could come in, and simply...what was going on here?!  It was a great day of fun in the sun, beer that couldnt be drunk on the street but only in the bus, music, meeting of new people, and making plenty of sales.  I went into the first event with no expectations to allow myself no opportunity to be disappointed.  And I was more than pleasantly surprised.  I had far more sales than expected and am so grateful for all the support and appreciation of the art in the bus for sale!
Lesson #3 Over the past 8 years I have been a travelling vegabond trying to build this business on the road.  Having been in Durham, NC now for 2.5 years is a blessing.  We have a solid friend family and to see their support was an incredibly exhilarating experience & I am so thankful for all of them coming and sharing about the event and bringing others and spreading the word.  Without them, this wouldnt have been the same first adventure!
So with that, time flew, I had some help packing things up, learning quickly from lesson #1 that I was to break down more than I had hoped and take her back on the road safely to get back to the studio.
A life changing day.  An amazing experience.  3 years of hard work built up to that moment of great change in my life and a career that has become something I on some days found it hard to imagine.  See you on the road for the next outing
